Have you received a letter that looks like this and has you concerned?
We did. So we thought we’d ease your minds and explain what is happening here. You need a domain name for a website. It’s the address where your website is found. There are quite a few Registrars out there – companies that will register your domain name for you. We use Webnames.ca, and they’re great. They are a Canadian-based company with years of experience and great customer service. Their rates are competitive, and they have a very easy-to-use interface.
Here at OmniOnline we include domain name registration and the associated cost in our hosting packages for up to two domain names, and offer our clients a special rate on multiple domain names as well. There are lots of reasons you may want more than 1 or 2 domain names, so we like to offer our customers options.
We also have customers that are “Domain Only” customers – where we manage the domain for them but they may not have their website hosted or even built by us. Or they may not have a website at all. Sometimes they have the domain name on spec, in case they want a website later, and sometimes they have the domain name only for the purposes of domain aliased email.
So, we’re always on the lookout for misleading or confusing marketing tactics from companies around the web – and we’ve seen variations on this particular piece from iDNS in the past (See the whole letter here). It’s actually even cost some of our clients time and money – as it looks very alerting and resembles an invoice, despite what it says in the text – that this is not a bill.
In fact, it’s an unsolicited piece of junk mail, outlining the consequences of letting your domain name expire – and offering to handle the transaction for you, simply send them the money and they’ll handle the rest.
But… it’s already being handled. You don’t need to do a thing. This is nothing more than a spam mail out trying to get you to switch a service you already pay for to a new company at very expensive rates.
