A Cyber Security Basic: Use Your Own Domain for Business Email
I’ve shared the importance of Domain Aliased Email in the past.
Late last week and early this week several of my clients got emails from scammers pretending to be me.
Someone took the time to create a free email account (with “@gmail”) but trying to convince people they were me. They offered to provide the details of a web scan, and to share some documents to help with the client website.
These are the types of emails I could send. They had my photo in the email signature, but luckily the clients knew we only send work emails from “@omnionline.net” email addresses.
1. If you get any emails from “paulomnionline@gmail.com” or something as clunky – please delete it. Don’t click any links or reply with any information.
2. If you’re using email addresses that are not tied to your domain name, consider upgrading. If you’re legitimately sending emails from “YourBusinessName@somefreeaccount.com” then what stops people from setting up something similar and trying to trick your clients?
Stay vigilant, people. New tools make it easier than ever to impersonate people.
You’ve spent a lot of time building your brand. Don’t make it easy for people to warp it.
